listen to various demos of mourning thieves songs here.

listen to devilish sunlight:

DEVILISH SUNLIGHT (DEMO)

devilish sunlight is a song about loving a good rainy day.

the very first line of the lyrics is an ode to one of my favorite books, the outsiders, which begins:

“When I stepped out into the bright sunlight, from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home...”

― S.E. Hinton

WORDS:

as i walked out into the bright sunlight, the only thing that hit me in my eyes was the deepest pain, right through to my brain. a revelation.

when i woke up this morning, as usual, my head ached. it bordered on critical. i thought to myself, “i just cannot face the sun”.

then i heard the rain as it fell on the skylight that usually lets in that devilish sunlight…and immediately, the pain, it started to subside.

because the only thing that makes me feel better is the dreary weather. it eases my pain. where i come from it ain’t easy, babe.

some may call me a fool for thinking this way like i do. but i assure you that it’s not a sin. they’ve not been where i’ve been. and they’ve never met my friends, the clouds. they are my new blanket. they cover me, and keep out the demons. and now i feel better than i’ve felt in days.

because the only thing that makes me feel better is the dreary weather. it eases my pain. where i come from it ain’t easy, babe.

listen to all your pretty things:

all your pretty things (demo)

all your pretty things is a song written for my daughter emma.  it's a song about growing up.

the version you hear here is a demo.  an acoustic guitar, midi strings, and a few vocal tracks.

words:

how could you run away...take all your pretty things...  could you run back into my arms?

how could you stand... or hold out your hand?  only to just let go...

i never knew joy until we had you.

how could you grow?  have thoughts of your own?  every day still brand new.

new like skin.  or waking up with an angel talking to you.

i never knew joy until we had you.

so how could you run away... take all your pretty things... could you run back into my arms?

listen to there's beauty:

there's beauty (demo)

there's beauty is a song written for my wife andrea.  the version you can play here is just a demo.  it's drums, one acoustic guitar, a shaker, and two vocal tracks, all performed by me and tracked by tobby lykins in a couple of hours one night.

words:

she's got ways to make me smile, even though it's been awhile since i could touch her face. but i know time can't take that away.

she's got ways to make my day. she tells me that it will be okay.

stay with me.  help me to see there's beauty when you're with me.

she's got ways to make me smile, even though it's been awhile since she was in my arms.  but i know time can do no harm.

she's got ways to take my cares and make me forget they were ever there.

stay with me.  help me to see there's beauty when you're with me.
